Erin Lancaster made this magazine spread for a Turkish DC cafe restaurant. In the article, she talks about where the restaurant is and a bit of history about it.

Photography Composition

This magazine spread is a great example of the rule of thirds. The drink in the mug is in the lower left hand corner of the page which is one of the 4 points in the composition of the rule of thirds.

Typeface Contrast

The heading font in this article and also the large font that says “Kafe” I believe in the font Bodoni. This is a modern font which means there is a high and abrupt contrast between thick and thin strokes in the shape of the letters. The body font is a sans serif font which means there is no visible thick to thin transitions in the strokes and the shape of the letters is the same thickness all the way around.

The two fonts go very well together because a sans serif font can be used as either a body or a heading font. These two fonts also make the ad have a modern approach to it.

For my alternative images, I chose to still go along with the theme of having the drink and other images that relate to cafe’s. I still kept the subject of the images in the lower left corner in order to keep the composition for the rule of thirds. I also mimicked the images by editing the images to make the background lighter to keep the color scheme of the original magazine spread.
